Scholarship Awarded to Modern History Undergraduate 15/11/2006

Professor Angela Woollacott Elected Fellow of the Academy of the Social Sciences 05/10/2006

Professor Angela Woollacott has just been elected a Fellow of the Academy of the Social Sciences in Australia . The Academy, established in 1971, is devoted to the advancement of knowledge and research in the social sciences. Membership of the Academy 'comprises those who have achieved a very high level of scholarly distinction, recognized internationally'.


Mary Bennett Prize for Women's History Won by Dr Lisa Featherstone 17/07/2006

The Mary Bennett Prize for Women's History was awarded to Dr Lisa Featherstone for her article "Sexy Mamas? Women, Sexuality and Reproduction in Australia in the 1940s', Australian Historical Studies no 126 October 2005. Prize awarded for best article by an earlier career researcher in any journal.


Abby Waldman Received Scholarship from the Cambridge Commonwealth Trust 25/05/2006

Abby Waldman has just received the wonderful news that she has been awarded a 3-year scholarship from the Cambridge Commonwealth Trust, to do a PhD in History at Cambridge University. Abby received her Hons (1st class) degree from the Department of Modern History last year.


Dr Marnie Hughes-Warrington to be Academic Commentators on UN's Initiative 03/05/2006

Dr Marnie Hughes-Warrington has accepted the invitation of the UN to be one of 10 academic commentators on one strand of its 'Alliance of Civilisations' Initiative. The initiative, operating under the direction of the Secretary General, will propose policies and programs in world history education and research as a means of fostering international understanding.


Bruce Mansfield in Modern History 30/03/2006

The Department of Modern History held an afternoon tea on 30 March 2006 to celebrate Emeritus Professor Bruce Mansfield’s 80 th birthday. In honour of this occasion, and Bruce’s contributions to historical scholarship and Macquarie University, an appeal to endow a Prize named in Bruce’s honour was launched. The prize will recognize outstanding research by an Honours candidate in Modern History and will be awarded annually.


The Irish Famine Memorial Prize 13/03/2006

Recent Modern History Honours graduate Lauren Wilson was awarded the Great Irish Famine Commemoration Committee prize at the Hyde Park Barracks on Monday 13 March 2006 by Irish Minister Brian Cowan. Drs Michelle Arrow and Trevor McClaughlin of the Department attended the ceremony.



Congratulations to Sharon Muffett 02/02/2006

Heartiest congratulations to Sharon Muffett, PhD student of the Department of Modern History who was awarded a commendation in the most recent round of Postgraduate Research Grants. A limited number of commendations are awarded across the university to recognise excellence in research and communication.

Teaching Award Success 2006

Congratulations to Marnie Hughes-Warrington who has been honoured with an award in recognition of her outstanding achievements in teaching. This award is the highest honour that the University confers for teaching. Her award will be presented at a Humanities graduation ceremony in 2006.
