Undergraduate

Studying Modern History at Macquarie University provides a distinct set of skills—information retrieval and management, analysis of evidence, argument and effective communication. These equip students for a range of challenging and exciting career opportunities in the fields of diplomacy and foreign affairs, journalism, travel and tourism, heritage and cultural agencies, administration, research and education. In addition, history units complement those in most other disciplines, especially politics, law, international studies, education and the social sciences.

The Department’s undergraduate program is developed around its teaching and research strengths in Australian History, European History, World History, Women and History and Historiography.

Credit Points

The hallmark of the program is its flexibility. Students can select from a range of 100 level units (3 credit points) which do not commit them in advance to particular units at 200 or 300 level (4 credit points each). Any 6 credit points in ancient or modern history gained at 100 level will allow entry to any 200 level history unit. On occasion entry to a unit may require a prerequisite (see Calendar).

Degrees and Majors

Students take units in modern history as part of a BA or BSocSc. A major in modern history requires a minimum of 68 credit points overall, with a maximum of 30 credit points at 100 level and a minimum of 18 credit points at 300 level or above which must include at least 12 credit points for history units at 300 level. A major in Australian history specifies a particular range of units at 300 level (see Calendar)

Students with appropriate qualifications (GPA 2.6 and above overall and 3 at 300 level) may consider entering the Department’s Honours Program on a full or part-time basis.
