European History

The Modern European including British History course after 100 level is divided into units dealing with (a) early modern history (c. 1450-1750), and (b) later modern history (c. 1750 to the present). The former units focus on religious change, popular culture, family history and material culture in a pre-industrial society, and the latter deal with the themes of revolution, industrialisation, nationalism, democracy and its opponents, and social policy. While the units can be studied separately, a student who takes them all will have the opportunity to study in depth the forces which have shaped the modern history of western and central Europe. Those with a particular interest in eastern Europe might consider units offered in French, German and Slavonic Studies in the Department of Modern Languages (particularly those with code EURO).
